(Updated 4.13.2021) Cisco announced on Tuesday, April 6th, 2021, the UCS B200 M6 blade server. Let’s take a look at what was revealed.
UCS B200 M6 Overview
The B200 M6 is built upon the 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor and offers the following:
- Up to 2 x 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable Processors (with up to 40 cores per socket)
- Up to 32 DIMMs (16 per CPU)
- Support for Intel Optane persistent memory (x16)
- Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card (VIC) 1440 modular LAN on Motherboard (mLOM).
- Two mezzanine card adapters: One rear slot for VIC (Cisco UCS VIC 1480 or port expander); One front dedicated slot for a Cisco FlexStorage RAID controller, Cisco FlexStorage passthrough, or Cisco® M.2 RAID controller
- (Updated 4.8.2021) Up to two SSD or NVMe disk drives or up to four M.2 drives (note, you can’t use SSD/NVMe and the M.2 – it’s one or the other.)
- (Updated 4.13.2021) The newly released spec sheet states “The B200 M6 has a power cap of 960W for all combinations of components.” This is concerning, however. Simple math on that shows: 960W x 8 servers = 7,680W yet the UCS 5108 only supports 4 x 2500W power which is equal to 5,000W of “redundant” power. Something doesn’t add up on this one.
